Virtual MIDI driver for Windows 7 up to Windows 10, 32 and 64 bit with the ability to dynamically create and destroy freely nameable MIDI-ports.

The necessity for virtualMIDI came along when I implemented my rtpMIDI-driver. Later I also used this driver when I created loopMIDI for people who only need simple loopback MIDI-ports.

I had some pretty specific requirements:

• Compatibility from Windows XP to Windows 10
• Both 32bit and 64bit operation
• On-the-fly creation (and destruction) of freely nameable virtual MIDI-ports
• Only one side of the ports was supposed to be visible to the public
• The other side only visible via a private interface
• Multi-client-capability

Since I had been hanging around on the wdmaudiodev mailinglist for quite some time due to my interest in kernel-streaming, I had already read quite a bit on the topic over there.

All of the people there suggested to use the DMusUart and the MPU401 sample as a starting-point. So that’s what I did and creating the actual driver had been not too hard after getting enough insights at the WDK-documentation.

Nevertheless all the stuff people had done prior to my attempts would not quite achieve what my requirement were.

All of those other virtual MIDI miniport driver implementations actually developed simple static “loopback” MIDI-ports. Loopback meaning that both ends of this port would be public. Static meaning that the number of ports and their names would be fixed at install-time of the driver (via the inf-file of the driver).

This was not satisfactory, so I looked some more and I found references to dynamic creation of sub-devices. But this was a hard nut to crack. Finally I had been able to locate a guy who was doing something similar for a virtual soundcard-driver for digital-audio-broadcast.

His insights have been invaluable. It still took quite some time to get everything going smoothly, but I finally succeeded in creating this driver.

One problem remained: Since Microsoft introduced Vista, all drivers for 64bit need to be code-signed. Though the idea itself is pretty nifty – to know the specific company that the code running in the kernel comes from – it had a severe drawback:

Only companies incorporated could apply for such a code-signing-certificate. Many people in the driver-development-community urged Microsoft to rectify this. And finally in May of 2010 it has been done. Since that time it is also possible for individuals to get their own code-signing certificate to be able to run their drivers on the 64bit versions of Vista and Windows 7.

The driver is currently part of the rtpMIDI-driver network-MIDI driver and the loopMIDI virtual loopback MIDI cable. But it can be used for other tasks as well.

If you have a music-application that needs to create its own freely named MIDI-devices on-the-fly – virtualMIDI is exactly the right tool. I have prepared a small & simple to use SDK with bindings for C/C++, Delphi, Java and C#.

LoopBe1

A Free Virtual MIDI Driver

LoopBe1 is an internal MIDI device for transferring MIDI data between computer programs. Basically LoopBe1 is an «invisible cable» to connect a MIDI outport of an application to any other application´s MIDI inport.
All MIDI data sent to the program´s output is channeled to the receiving applications in realtime.
You may connect up to 8 applications to LoopBe’s inport and up to 8 applications to the outport, all sending and receiving at the same time.

LoopBe1 is a native Windows™ WDM kernel mode driver, so expect the lowest possible latency. Programs do not need to link with special libraries, so LoopBe1 works with every MIDI or DirectMusic™-capable application.

LoopBe1 comes with a Systray Icon. You can switch it on and off like a hardware device and view its status.

MIDI Feedback — Shortcut Detection

Think of an application opening in- and outport of LoopBe1 and connecting both ports via MIDI through: you would get an infinite loop of MIDI data, circling in realtime, which would seriously slow down the whole computer. As modern MIDI applications may open several ports, this happens all too easily.

LoopBe1 has a powerful shortcut detection to avoid MIDI feedback. If a feedback is detected, LoopBe1 will immediately mute its port, interrupt the loop and popup a message. After disabling the malicious MIDI through within your program you can easily enable LoopBe1 again at its systray icon.

В Windows, устройства миди автоматически соединяется с выходом MIDI по умолчанию, которым обычно является тон генератор «Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth», идущий в комплекте со всеми версиями Windows. Для использования популярных VST синтезаторов совместно с миди плеером или программным миди контроллером необходим виртуальный миди кабель. В Windows можно использовать такие MIDI кабели, как например: MIDI Yoke, Maple, LoopBe1, Sony Virtual MIDI Router или loopMIDI.

В процессе установки виртуального MIDI кабеля будут установлены драйвер и апплет панели управления, в котором можно изменять доступное количество MIDI портов.

Виртуальный MIDI кабель работает, посылая каждое событие MIDI, записанное на OUT порт, на соответствующий IN порт. Например, MIDI Assist можно соединить с выходом порта 1, а другая программа, к примеру VST Host, может считывать события с порта 1.

VirtualMIDISynth is a software MIDI synthesizer implemented as a Windows multimedia user driver, accessible as a standard MIDI Out device.

It works on Windows XP (SP3) / Vista (SP1) / 7 (SP1) / 8.x / 10 / 11 (both x86 and x64), and is based on the great BASS library from un4seen.

Introduction

Playing a MIDI (o karaoke) file on Windows has always been a poor-quality experience, because the well known bundled «Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth» synth is just. ehm. simple: poor samples, mono sound, no effects (reverb, chorus) support.

Software synts deeply improve quality, but sometimes they’re difficult to install or limited to specific uses, like the ones integrated in some DAWs or karaoke players.

Till Windows XP some virtual devices existed on 32bits systems, like the well-known YAMAHA XG SoftSynthetizer S-YXG50 and Cakewalk-sfz+ (both unsupported now).
Nowadays, on x64 systems, we’re out of luck: none of them works anymore.

One day Ian Luck (un4seen) added to his BASSMidi library a great feature: the possibility to render a live MIDI stream, including SysEx messages. I quickly realized that, if only I could intercept that MIDI stream and drive it through Ian’s library, well, we would have got a great MIDI Synth.
The challenge was to create a good quality synth and keep the end user away from complicated virtual MIDI chains (ever tried VanBasco -> MIDI Yoke/LoopBe1 -> SynthFont chain ?).

User only needs a new virtual MIDI Out device, select it as output on his preferred player settings and. start playing, nothing more.

Here we are, VirtualMIDISynth is the answer: an user mode multimedia x86/x64 driver that works on Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (both x86 and x64), implemented as a MIDI Out virtual device.

    FAQ & Troubleshooting

    Why are you still playing MIDI files? Have you ever heard of MP3?
    Well, first because MIDIs are cool and compact; in a few megabytes you can store thousands songs.
    Second, I love Karaoke; VanBasco is one of my preferred MIDI/KAR players.
    Third, with MIDI you can silent some tracks, change tempo and pitch easily.

    I tried playing a MIDI file on my PC, and it sucks!
    I agree, that’s why I wrote VirtualMIDISynth!
    MIDI only contains «instructions» on what should be played: instruments, notes, their length, power and so on. It’s up to the synthesizer to generate sound from these «commands».
    The bundled Windows synthesizer, «Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth», is the worst.

    Which players work with VirtualMIDISynth?
    VirtualMIDISynth works with Windows Mediaplayer and MPlayer classic. Since these players cannot change their MIDI out device, you must set VirtualMIDISynth as your default device.
    I suggest you to try VanBasco player, which is one of the best MIDI/KAR players around.

    How much does it cost?
    VirtualMIDISynth is freeware, you can use it as you like.
    If you use it «professionally» you’re encouraged to make a donation.

    Why are you releasing it for free?
    Because the greatest part of MIDI synthesis is done by BASS libraries from un4seen; I only wrapped them in a Windows driver and gave them an easy to use interface.
