Всё таки, мне кажется, что употребляя слово хард, подразумевают не все аппаратные средства компьютера, а именно жёсткий диск. Поправьте меня, если я не права.

Обычно говорят жёсткий диск или винчестер.
Я думаю, что говоря хард (жёсткость), подразумевается, всё, что не виртуально. А когда говорят хард полетел, то тут можно догадаться, что это винчестер.
Когда появляется синий экран смерти, там обычно сообщается о проблеме в hardware или в software.

Обычно такие, не стоящие выеденного яйца, вопросы задают ТРОЛЛИ
или люди, которым просто скучно, но с этого троллинг часто и начинается.
Я просто к тому, что мы часто между собой общаемся на сленге, и не каждый догадается, куда полетел хард и причём тут винчестер. 
Поэтому, не всякий может понять, что «проверь хард на ошибки», может относиться только к жёсткому диску, а будет мучительно сопостовлять, какое же у него ещё оборудование может относиться к аппаратному обеспечению и каким образом его проверить.
И моё уточнение, ни в коей мере не относиться к критике статьи Надежды. Мне всегда нравился её положительный и доброжелательный подход к своим читателям.
Бывает что ТРОЛЛИ ничего и не знают о троллинге. потому что дело здесь совсем не в критике.

Читая комментарии, подумала, что в теме упростила все до такой степени, что написала просто «hard» и надо срочно исправить на «hardware». Проверила — ух, выдохнула 🙂 в теме все верно написано.
Слово «hardware» в русский язык по причине сложности его произношения для русскоговорящих людей не попало. А вошло слово «hard» (хард), под которым принято понимать «железо», то есть, компьютер (без программного обеспечения) и всю периферию.
Винчестер называют также HDD (hard disk drive), жесткий диск, винт.
Знакомые лингвисты, если их спросить про значение любого слова в ответ всегда спрашивают: «В каком контексте употребляется это слово?» Так вот, из контекста «проверь хард на ошибки» можно понять (догадаться), что речь идет о жестком диске. Хотя сказать по правде, я бы все-таки уточнила: «проверить винчестер?»
